We all felt the effort was very worthwhile. We were especially excited when a number of Republican women voters CHANGED THEIR PARTY AFFILIATION by filling out a new voter registration form! There were many women who didn't care much about politics or voting. They are the 18-24 year olds we had learned at the DDW June 1 program are the ones we need to find creative ways to reach.
A woman who had a booth nearby dropped by to say that she had written all the candidates to invite them to attend the fair and the only ones to show up or to respond to the invitation were Democrats. One of these was Kay Hagan who sent an encouraging letter. A woman who is well known in the area because she used to own a popular restaurant, visited briefly because she was on her way to the state Democratic Convention. She thought the letter writing campaign sounded like a great idea and might take on the role of coordinator in Hargett County.
