But I have grown especially alarmed and frustrated in the last few years by the progressively destructive actions of the Republicans, particularly here in my home state. I can no longer stand by, while my state is systematically subjugated and consumed by powerful corporate and financial interests who have taken control of our State Capitol. Their Republican flunkies, placed in office by these interests, have proven time and again that Greed surpasses any responsibility they owe their constituents.
I have never been overly politically active, beyond the occasional letter to my Representatives, though I do try to keep informed. But I have recently realized that the current situation is so serious - so critical - that to do nothing is not an option. It is my responsibility as a citizen to fight back against forces I feel would demolish everything I believe is good in this country. If I stay silent; if I give in to apathy, then I am as much to blame as those who subvert my government for their own gain.
You see, I love North Carolina. I loved it as a child, growing up here, and though I have lived in other states since childhood, it was that love that brought me back 'home' twenty years ago. I can't stand by and watch her resources plundered, her natural beauty despoiled, her vibrant cities descend into crime-ridden slums, her countryside ravaged and polluted, and her people....her wonderful, friendly, kind, generous people- oppressed and abandoned to poverty, misery and ignorance.
The only solution I can see: the only way to take back our government from the corporate lackies (and yes, I do include Duke Energy) is to elect Democratic candidates.
Why Democrats, you may ask? Because despite my aversion to political parties on principle, there is one very big difference between Democrats and Republicans in my mind. I have never doubted the good intentions of the Democratic Party. I believe Democrats genuinely want to do what's best for America and for Americans- ALL Americans.
I do not have the same faith in the Republicans. I know too many Republicans who loudly proclaim their love for America...but who despise most Americans. Except, of course for those Americans who are the right color; who go to the right churches; who live in the right neighborhoods; who fall in love with the right people; who 'know their place', and who believe whatever their Conservative leaders (and Fox News) tells them to believe. The Republican Party, at least in this state, seems dedicated only to money...more money for the already wealthy, that is. They have proven themselves willing to sell this state off for the almighty dollar.
I believe the Democrats can do better. I believe they will put the state and the people first. I want to do what I can to help that happen. Perhaps that seems odd. But one expects a Democrat to support Democratic candidates. When an Independent stands up for you, you know you must be doing something right.
