I wish you all could have been there yesterday at our March into Voting History from the Farmers Market to the Downtown Durham Early Vote site at the Durham History Hub. We wanted to publicize the new site -- and with the help of the Southern High Marching Band Drum Line, a Color Guard that included Fred Foster, candidate for County Commissioner, and lots of parents with kids and women with dogs and old folks and young folks and folks of every color we marched for early voting, and like the famed pied piper brought lots of folks along with us. Maybe we're why the Downtown site had the highest number of voters in Durham County yesterday. No one could resist those South HIgh Spartans! You can catch a glimpse of them, and of Helen and me carrying the Durham Democratic Women banner at this news clip from Channel 11. The report includes the DurhamKidsVoting march also. http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/video?id=8854492
We still need more help getting folks out to vote. Making phone calls and canvassing. This work -- especially door-to-door canvassing -- really makes a difference. A friendly face at the door, urging support for our side, can mean two or three more voters actually show up at the polls. All canvassing and phone banking and data entry work is being done through neighborhood staging locations now so go to My Barrack Obama and see all the opportunities there are for you to help in your neighborhood. https://my.barackobama.com/page/event/search_simple
Magnolia Grill is the staging area for Central/West Durham so if that is your neighborhood -- just head by any day. They are also looking for drivers to the polls. You can sign up here. Drive voters to the polls. If you can’t canvass, but you can drive, sign up here to be an on-call driver for canvassers. We need drivers for every canvass shift. If you can canvass though, do! It is 8 times more effective than any other form of volunteering. http://www.doodle.com/nzuw2wbax6fdeybr#table
Once we get folks fired up and ready to go -- we need to make sure that they vote straight Democratic. Not just for the President, but for all the Democrats on the ballot (so we can take back the General Assembly in NC as well as win the Presidency) and for the Fair Judges. Will you help us?
Kate Fellman and I are coordinating the North Library site and we have been steadily busy every day so far, with over a 1000 voters each day.
We need help on Wednesday, October 24 for multiple shifts, Thursday morning at 9, and shifts on Saturday and Sunday. If you can help out, please sign up athttp://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C054FABA82CA57-north
I've done four shifts already and I love it! Folks coming to vote really want help and are so glad to have us walk them through our Obama Straight Flip Card.
It will make you feel so good to see how good they feel as they walk out of the polling places with big smiles on their faces.
We also need help on Thursday at South Regional Library and every day at East Regional Library. Visit https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AnBUyy3AItiadEQ1V2tnOG5fVkc4OWhCX1pCV1BJMHc#gid=0 to help out at these sites, too!
If you know someone who is reliable and a great campaigner who needs work, the Democratic Party may be able to pay for someone to work at East. Will you let me know if you know someone who is interested that you could recommend?
If you are working the North Regional LIbrary than Tony Foriest is the Democratic candidate for US HOuse of Representatives. He is a good guy, who has served Democrats well in the NC Senate. From Alamance County, his district has been rejiggered so that Durham Democrats are divided up. We sure don't want to end us with Coble as our representative. As bad as Burr as our Senator. So check out this link to find out something more about him, so that you encourage folks to support him for Congress. http://www.foriestforcongress.com Or watch him on It's your Time. Air dates and times for IT'S YOUR TIME program on WCNC - 36.1 and LIVE WELL - 36.2
This one-hour election-year special has been scheduled to air on the following dates and times:
DAY/DATE TIME STATION CHANNEL
Sunday, 10/21 1:00pm WCNC – Live Well 36.2
Sunday, 10/28 11:30am WCNC 36.1
Sunday, 10/28 1:00pm WCNC – Live Well 36.2
And my final message to you all for today is an encouraging email from Durham Democratic Women member Angie Elkins. She sent a copy of the endorsement of our President by the Salt Lake City Utah Tribune. Yep, Romney's folks, endorsing the President. It is a very strong critique of Romney. And an equally strong endorsement of the President. Here's how it ends:
In considering which candidate to endorse, The Salt Lake Tribune editorial board had hoped that Romney would exhibit the same talents for organization, pragmatic problem solving and inspired leadership that he displayed here more than a decade ago [with the Olympics]. Instead, we have watched him morph into a friend of the far right, then tack toward the center with breathtaking aplomb. Through a pair of presidential debates, Romney’s domestic agenda remains bereft of detail and worthy of mistrust.
Therefore, our endorsement must go to the incumbent, a competent leader who, against tough odds, has guided the country through catastrophe and set a course that, while rocky, is pointing toward a brighter day. The president has earned a second term. Romney, in whatever guise, does not deserve a first.
Please help our President take advantage of the growing concern about who Romney is and what he stands for and the growing recognition that President Obama has earned a second term by what he has accomplished for all of us in his first term.
We are all in this together. And together we can win.
