Dear Durham Democratic Women and Friends:
Next Wednesday, April 17th 10 AM – 12 Noon Durham Democratic Women is launching what we hope will become a regular, weekly vigil outside the State House in Raleigh. It all depends on you.
We want to send a message to our legislators that their actions do not represent us. That we are standing up for
§ The right to access to quality and affordable health care for our families.
§ The right to quality public education for our children.
§ The right to live in communities that are safe and healthy.
§ The right to vote for elected officials who will stand up for us, protect our rights, and vote our best interests.
These are Durham Democratic Women’s legislative priorities for 2013--set by all of us at a meeting in January. Since then, of course, this General Assembly has added many more issues to our list of concerns:
– their attack on a woman’s right to make her own family planning decisions;
– their vicious cut to unemployment insurance for the long term unemployed to make up for a shortfall which is the result of their own short-sightedness.
– their cut in Earned Income Tax Credits for working families so they can cut taxes for estates and corporations.
– their repeal of the Racial Justice Act…
The list of attacks on our well-being grows everyday and will just keep growing until we act to take back our state.
We are joining together with other groups across the state and calling ourselves the People’s Lobby. Our goal is to be a regular, persistent reminder to our Governor and to every man and woman in the General Assembly that they are our elected representatives and we will not go away until their actions represent us!
The women united for peace in Liberia did it! Their persistent vigil brought peace to their country after years of violence and the election of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first female President, who has begun the process of transforming government to attend to the people’s needs. They are our inspiration! We can make our government listen to us too!
Wednesday will be our first vigil from 10-12 noon, on the lawn in front of the State House [left side, of course!] on W Jones St. We have signs and leaflets for passersby. So Join our People’s Lobby. Invite your friends and family too. Returning North Carolina to social and economic justice is a family affair.
If you want to car pool from Durham email us at durhamdemwomen@gmail.com or call me at 2020-271-7163.
Hope to see you Wednesdays in Raleigh…
